It surprises me, but quite often practice members will ask, “Who adjusts you Dr. Stephanie?” As convenient as it would be, chiropractors can’t adjust themselves. No can reach their own spine with the correct angle, line of drive and thrust to deliver a specific adjustment to themselves. Just like you, we rely on someone else to keep us in alignment. And just like many of you, our job is one of the things that cause subluxations (misalignments) in our spines. Have you ever watched us adjust? We are bent over most of our day!
So the answer is that Dr. Jen is my chiropractor and normally she adjusts me once or twice a week. I usually prefer to get adjusted on Thursdays, after my week of hunched-over-adjusting. Then my body can heal and repair over the weekend. But lately Dr. Jen has been getting her workout with me! About five weeks ago I was rear-ended while stopped in traffic. My entire spine, but especially my neck and skull were affected by the impact. My usual once a week wellness adjustment has turned into a three to four times a week corrective adjustment. I am so thankful to have talented and passionate chiropractor taking care of me, especially in my spine’s time of crisis.
Let this be a reminder of two things:
- Never try to “crack” or adjust your own spine. It never works out well. Even the professionals leave it to other professionals to take care of them.
- If you are usually a wellness practice member and you have a new trauma to your spine, please let us know! You may need some extra adjustments to repair damage or get you back on track. Remember to keep us updated on new falls, car accidents, sports injuries, long days spent traveling, long hours sitting at a computer or times of increased work/home stress.
