Giving the Gift of Regaining Life Again…

Imagine for a moment that your world was turned completely upside down. Imagine that in one instant, everything you already knew how to do was gone.  Imagine that all of a sudden, there you were in your 30’s learning how to speak again, learning how to feed yourself again, learning how to do all the things you once knew how to do all over again. Imagine this happening when you were still single (no spouse by your side) starting your own life out and your family over 2000 miles away.  Not the most pleasant thing to think about right?  I ask you to imagine this, because this is what happened to my friend Lacey.

Lacey is a friend from chiropractic school. I would describe Lacey as a ray of sunshine no matter what was going on in the world.  She was always full of positive energy, always exuding love towards everyone (and every living thing) she came in contact with. To say she was one of the sweetest, most kindest people I’ve ever met doesn’t seem to put into perspective how generous and kind she truly is. As many of you know through our Season of Giving going on in our office, Lacey unfortunately was involved in a very random accident over a year ago. She was riding her horse back home (she lives in Utah) in September 2011 and they were hit by a car. In an instant her life changed beyond anyones control. Since that day, Lacey has been on the long road of recovery from a traumatic brain injury. Thankfully, Lacey has a phenomenal support group of very close friends and family around her, and she is in a wonderful facility to help her on her healing journey. Unfortunately, since Lacey is going through the process of re-learning everything in life again and healing from the multiple injuries, she is no longer able to do what she loved so much; she is no longer able to serve as a chiropractor.  This not only leaves Lacey without a way of providing a means to live for herself, it also leaves her without the ability to perform her passion; it leaves her without the ability to help others heal.

We decided to help Lacey in our Season of Giving this year to help offset some of the mounting costs of her rehabilitation process. She is going through many different surgeries and therapies to help her one day be able to stand and hopefully walk again. She is also going through therapies to help her continue to regain her speech,  regain fine motor control of her hands, etc. Basically, Lacey is re-learning everything she once already knew how to do.  Some of the costs of her rehabilitation process are covered by the healthcare system, however many of them are not. (I’ll just leave it at that)  Everyone close to Lacey wants her to recover to the best possible potential she has. Everyone would want the same for someone they cared about.

The next time you’re in the office, take a moment to read about our Season of Giving if you haven’t already. It’s very easy to participate in and it will make a big impact in one person’s life.  The holidays are always full of the spirit of giving, let’s help give one person the chance of regaining a little more of her life back.

Wishing everyone and their families a happy, healthy, safe Holiday Season,
Dr. Jen
