It’s Memorial Day. Now listen, I generally try to be an upbeat, reasonable person. Memorial Day can be a little frustrating though. I say this because, while I appreciate a long weekend and the fun that can be had, we’ve lost the point of this day. This day is to honor our soldiers. To honor the brave who fought, who’ve sacrificed, and who still fight to this day. I sleep peacefully at night, but it is not without cost. I go about my day, living freely, because someone paid for that freedom with their own. I’m thankful for this.
I slip into the habit of forgetting sometimes, though. I live in Meredith….the lake this weekend has been insane. There was a police officer managing the traffic at the Hannaford, that is .3 miles from my house. People are out boating, swimming, and having picnics. I think this is great, but my request is that as we enjoy the time having fun with our families, we remember the price paid for this awesome freedom. Thank you to our soldiers and thank you to their families for the sacrifices made.
In “Saving Private Ryan”, Tom Hanks’ character is dying and says to Matt Damon’s character (Private Ryan), who they have just saved, “earn this”. Obviously, the film is talking to all of us. Brave people have given so much and our job is to live a life of purpose and worth, to make the most of each moment in order to make our lives an honor to their sacrifice……”earn this”.
When it comes to your life then, you must be as healthy as possible. A wasted life of sloth, unhappiness, and poor health does not allow you to live optimally and honor our soldiers sacrifice. That is not earning anything. Want to honor your freedom? Then keep it simple….eat healthy food, move daily, keep your nervous system working perfectly with chiropractic, and have a positive mindset. These things allow you to function at a high level and actually accomplish what you should with your life. Like freedom, health isn’t given it is earned. So my friends, on this Memorial Day make the commitment to say thank you to our brave men and women not with words, but actions and “earn this.”
