The Miracle of You

Christmas is rushing upon us. As I type this it is less than 3 weeks away! I definitely have some presents to buy and some housework to do. The holiday season is such an interesting time with themes such as faith, family, presents, and joy brightening away some of the cold and new winter gray. One idea that I always seem to associate with Christmas is the idea of miracles. Depending on your worldview the birth of Christ is miraculous. The films of the season are filled with miracles: “Miracle on 34th St.”, “It’s A Wonderful Life”, etc. Moreover, our lives simply feel like they could be filled with miracles around the holiday. We are all extra kind and giving and as a result the doors of possibility feel like for this short period of time they swing wide open, welcoming all with cocoa and a warm fire. The lights, the hope, peace on earth and goodwill towards men….miracles feel real.
In the same breath that I speak of life feeling more miraculous around the holidays, I quickly realize that everyday is miraculous. Every moment is wrought with possibility. Don’t let the minutiae of life change that for you. Don’t let the weight of stress rob you of that truth.
I am honored daily to be a chiropractor and so many times I get to see some very miraculous happenings real time in our offices. You should know, however, that these miracles have little to nothing to do with us and everything to do with the miraculous body that each of you possesses as a vessel for the Innate Intelligence that is God’s design expressing itself in you. Every breath is a miracle. Your body constantly is monitoring and changing literally an uncountable number of functions at any given second…the heart beat, respiration rate, blood pressure, organ function, nerve sensation/function, pH balance in the gut, the list would go on and on. Your body does this without your input, it does it by design. It performs it’s tasks perfectly, when working properly. The epicenter of running all these operations is the brain and nerve system, of course. As chiropractors we pay special attention to the spine, because a subluxation or misalignment of the spinal bones can decrease the function of the nerve system and thus cause a myriad of problems for an individual. When a chiropractor removes the subluxation or interference from the spine the nerve system can start working fully and the body in turn responds by working exactly as it is meant to. You see the chiropractor just wants to help you get out of your own way, but once that happens you are truly a miracle. Your own body and the intelligence that organizes and operates your body restores function and heals you in a perfect manner that drugs or new science can only fantasize about. You are your own best doctor. You are amazing, you are a miracle.
We get to see it daily in the child who no longer has ear infections. In the baby who no longer deals with colic. We see in the practice member in Meredith who has gone from 40 headaches per month to 5 per month (she was told she would never get any improvement by the neurologist at the pain clinic, via drug therapy and thus this pain was her life sentence). Never underestimate your body’s own capacities to heal when the nerve system functions correctly. Never believe anyone who doubts your ability to heal on your own, they are denying the miracle that is you.
It is going to be a wonderful holiday season. It has nothing to do with presents (they are nice, but not the point). It has to do with family, friends, faith, joy, hope, and yes miracles. That’s why we feel so excited during this season, because these things should be our drive daily, but so rarely are. When the holidays pass and these feelings start to fade, don’t let it happen. You have no need to, because everyday is miraculous, because you are in it with your wonderfully designed, self healing, self regulating miracle of a body.

Wishing you the best, Dr. Graham, chiropractor
